A theory exists that memory quilts for competition or even just public display should incorporate photos into block settings as opposed to simply framing them with sashing or scattering them on a solid background like a scrapbook arrangement. So I've compiled a list of a few blocks I think work well with photos, along with links to block patterns. Most of these patterns are free of charge. These and many more may be found in just about any published collection of favorite block patterns.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, however, and I personally believe quilters should be able to put photos in quilts as they see fit. I prefer most of my fabric photos sashed and quilted. I like bringing out a third dimension or texture by stitching image outlines and sometimes even embellishing flowers, clouds, icicles and lakes. My 14er quilt might not do well in a juried competition because my placement of blocks might not be considered creative, eye-catching or unique enough, but try raffling a log cabin-themed quilt with tiny little photos to a room full of hardcore mountain climbers to raise money for search and rescue. Chances are you'll improve ticket sales with large, recognizable photos instead of thumbnails in fancy settings only quilters appreciate. Think about who will be looking at your quilt every day. Is the recipient aware of quilt show requirements? Or will he or she appreciate your matched corners and color wheel harmonies? I long for the day I can print one photo on 20 to 30 fabric squares for a mural-size whole-cloth quilt face. No sashing, no borders, no distractions. Just one vertical giant landscape or wildflower to throw on my guestroom bed or hang on an entryway wall. Who cares what quilt judges might say? I'm the one who'll be looking at the masterpiece every day! Nevertheless, on with my list:
